Alder Rustic Knotty is a material grade characterized for its "open dead knots" which may contain cracks. There can be drastic color and grain variation, and mineral streaks. It may also contain pin knot clusters and large knots (no limit in size). INSIGHT: Some suppliers and vendors in the industry refer to this material grade as Knotty Alder. However, Decore-ative Specialties has named this grade Alder Rustic Knotty.

Featuring consistent color and grain, Alder Select presents the least amount of natural characteristics, making it a great option for many applications. Its color can vary from a pale yellow to reddish brown, and has a soft, straight grained, even texture, making it a great choice for staining.

Featuring rich red tones, Cherry Select has a minimized amount of color variation along with reduced allowance for pin knots and other natural characteristics. Cherry Select may still display small amounts of pitch pockets on the face, as this naturally occurs in Cherry.

European Steamed Beech features a relatively straight and even appearance, though it may contain chevron patterned grain. Due to the steaming process this material goes through the color is fairly consistent in tone, ranging from tan to reddish brown. It is thought to be similar in appearance to Alder, except for the small flecks in the grain.

Featuring the least amount of color and grain variation and natural characteristics, Maple Select displays a lighter color tone and is a great option for a clear or light stain.

Natural Birch is cut from material containing both heartwood and sapwood, which will have an allowance for a "calico" mix of both Pink and White tones. It may also contain other Natural Grade characteristics such as small closed knots, pin knots, mineral streaks and color variation.

General Characteristics:

Heartwood reddish, pinkish, salmon colored, or yellowish when fresh; deepening with age to deep rich red or brown; distinct from the yellowish or whitish sapwood. Luster high and golden; texture rather fine to coarse; grain straight to roey, wavy, or curly, often with an attractive figure; odor and taste not distinctive.

General Description
The sapwood is light-colored and the heartwood is light to dark brown. White oak is mostly straight-grained with a medium to coarse texture, with longer rays than red oak. White oak therefore has more figure.
